What is "Home Sharing"?
Home sharing is when two or more un-related individuals share a living experience to their mutual benefit.
What is HomeShare Sarasota?
- Our purpose is to help members of our community find an affordable housing option within Sarasota County.
- We are focused on connecting homeowners (providers) and home seekers (renters) through a purposeful matching process that takes into consideration participants’ needs, interests and lifestyles. These vary from person to person, so no two home share situations are alike.
- HomeShare Sarasota is managed by the Sarasota Housing Funding Corporation which is a non-profit 501c3 community housing organization.
- Donations and gifts to our cause are tax deductible.

How We Help
We recognize that there are alternative ways to finding your home share partner. But for those who seek assistance, we are here to help. Keeping your lifestyle preferences and safety in mind, we provide multi-level screening and conduct reference and background checks on all our participants. We introduce potential providers and renters to each other, but the choice of entering into a home share agreement remains firmly in their hands.
Because “the match” is the unique key to a successful home share, we do not rush our screening process and cannot guarantee a match.
We guide you through the process from application to agreement, and only when an agreement is reached, do we process a one-time match fee equitable to both parties.
Why Home Share?
What are the mutual benefits of home sharing?
Financial
Lower housing costs for both home provider and renter can make the difference between the provider being able to remain in their home and the renter from having to live farther away from work, friends and family. Money saved can be spent to enhance lifestyle choices.
Social
Companionship counters the isolation and negative health impacts of living alone and may provide a layer of friendship and safety, or peace of mind that may not be present in single family households.

- Are owning and maintaining your home becoming less affordable?

- Are you lonely? Would you enjoy some companionship, socialization or extra help a home share companion might provide?

Home Owners
Sharing Your Home
There are two types of home share arrangements that we process:
[1] Rent alone, or
[2] Rent & services *
* In exchange for a lower rent, renters can help by providing light housekeeping, home care, driving or any other services that are agreed to between the provider and renter.
If you own or rent your home, you could be a home share provider. We pose no age or income restrictions to be eligible for the program. Anyone can share his or her home if basic requirements are met. This means providing a separate, private bedroom—and a private bath is a plus.
Once your application has been received and processed, we will arrange to tour your property and discuss all the amenities you offer, expected rent, and traits you are looking for in a renter.

Renters
Finding a Home
If you are looking for a shared living experience, you could be a home renter. Home sharing is one way to reduce rental costs in higher rent areas. We pose no age restriction for you to be considered eligible. We do check references, conduct a background check and validate your income.
There are two types of home share arrangements that we process:
[1] Rent alone, or
[2] Rent & services*
* In exchange for a lower rent, renters can help by providing light housekeeping, home care, driving or other services that are agreed to between the provider and renter. Give some thought to what services you might be able and willing to provide.
HSS does not provide emergency housing or subsidized housing. Rental costs are determined between the home provider and renter and are only guided by HomeShare Sarasota.
Once your application has been received and processed, we will arrange to meet with you to discuss all the amenities you require, acceptable rent range, and traits you are looking for in a home provider.
